Those staying in a Boulder hotel between now and the end of January, 2009, may wish to take a short trip to Denver, where an informative exhibition on abstract expressionist Clyfford Still is currently being held.

Collecting 13 pieces of the talented artist's unique paintings, including never-seen-in-public paper sketches, the Denver Art Museum will also be looking at the American post-World War II abstract expressionist movement, as well as one of it leading figures.

After his death in 1980, the majority of Still's work was sealed by his estate, but the city of Denver was selected in 2004 as the location for a new museum dedicated to housing this work, believed to be in excess of 2,400 pieces.

The Denver Art Museum's exhibit, which features a 1940s self-portrait, is a perfect introduction to one of America's most important artists, before his own museum opens to the public in 2010.

With the vast majority of Still's work sealed by his estate after his death in 1980, this is a rare chance to see some of the painter's work, including a 1940s self-portrait.

His masterpiece, 1957-D No. 1, is an engaging piece of work that juxtaposes yellow and black shapes, which can still be viewed at the at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York.
